What is physical therapy?

 

Physical therapy is an individualized “hands on” approach to help people with various injuries and conditions.

Your first visit to our clinic will involve an evaluation by a licensed physical therapist that includes an assessment of posture, range of motion, strength, soft tissue condition, function, and mobility. Based on these results and physical therapy diagnosis, the therapist will design an individualized treatment plan to meet your goals.

Modalities

These are a variety of treatment tools conducted by physical therapists to decrease pain and inflammation. Based on your diagnosis, the therapist may utilize ultrasound, electrical stimulation, infrared, iontophoresis, heat and ice.

Manual Therapy

These are manual techniques performed by the physical therapist which include soft tissue mobilization, myofascial release, cranioscacral therapy, strain/counterstrain, joint mobilization, spinal manipulation, cupping, instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization, and dry needling.

Spinal Mechanical Traction

This is a state of the art mechanical device that is used to treat the cervical and lumbar spine. Traction decompresses the spine which therefore provides increase joint space, relieves pressure on the discs, and decreases nerve root irritation.

Therapeutic Exercise

These are exercises that focus on restoring strength, endurance, range of motion, flexibility, and functional mobility. The exercises can include but not limited to utilizing a treadmill, recumbent bicycle, elliptical, free weights, medicine ball, therapy ball, resistance bands and Total Gym.

Dynamic Activities

Dynamic activities are used to restore ability to bend, lift and carry; and improve balance and coordination.

Gait Training

Patients are instructed in the use of appropriate assisted devices; as well as instructed in proper gait pattern to enhance functional outcomes.

Patient Education

Patients will be educated in the pathophysiology of their condition. They will receive instruction in proper body mechanics and posture, home exercise program, activity modifications and pain management. Recommendations for proper footwear and orthotics will be made when as appropriate.
